This book is an autobiography by a prominent mathematician, Goro Shimura. His mathematical achievements are well-known for professional mathematicians, and so I'm not going to refer to them in detail. The interested readers are referred to his Collected Papers, vol. I-IV, Springer, 2003.

Apparently most Japanese think that "The Map of My Life" is just a translation of the Japanese edition "記憶の切繪図," and that they don't need to read the former.

I cannot help saying that how stupid they are. For the content of "The Map of My Life" is a good deal different from that of "記憶の切繪図." Let me show the grounds for this. First of all, the number of mathematicians picked out isn't equal at all. That of the former outnumbers that of the latter. Secondly, the former appends valuable documents which tell a story of the so-called Shimura conjecture. Besides, there are such exemplifications here and there.

In short, shouldn't you be a layperson, you might want to read "The Map of My Life."
