My initial interest was in extending the ideas to KÄahler surfaces rather than just algebraic
surfaces, but as Donaldson pointed out, there is a theorem of Kodaira which states that every
KÄahler surface is a deformation of an algebraic surface, so from the di®erentiable viewpoint
there is nothing to be gained. Consequently I turned my attention to the non-KÄahler case, but
that is another story.
